ROSALIE CANTIN - ARTIST

Originally from Quebec City, Rose Cantin will live in Montreal for a few years until 2021, where she will decide to return to settle in nature in Lac Beauport. With an atypical background in jewelry and industrial design, she has transposed her interests for form, composition and material into pictorial abstraction since 2009. Naturally diligent and meticulous, the autodidact draws inspiration from constructivist and minimalist movements to create works in which clear geometric shapes and profiled lines master the instability of the hazardous gesture. Dripping, folding and piling up thus thwart the controlled intentions of its frame. This eternal battle between the organized and the chaotic animates Rose Cantin's production, but also punctuates her personal life. Divided between the compulsion for order and the intriguing beauty of novelty, she only manages to marry these two impulses on the canvas.

Naturally diligent and meticulous, Rose Cantin draws inspiration from constructivist and minimalist trends to create works in which straightforward geometric shapes and profiled lines master the instability of the hazardous gesture. Dripping, pleating, piling up and a myriad of random and repetitive gestures thus come to thwart the controlled intentions of its initial framework. This eternal battle between the organized and the chaotic animates the production of the autodidact and serves as a guideline for his diverse, but always elegant and refined, collections.

The pictorial and sculptural work of Rose Cantin is a constant back and forth between impulse and control.  It generally begins with the precise and impeccable demarcation of a work area in which the artist allows himself to let go. This is followed by the application of colors and textures of different intensities which will then be carefully balanced in order to satisfy the designer’s need for uniformity and delicacy.
